Thomas looked at the brown pouch that had just fallen out from inside the lining of Claire’s wedding dress, then slowly opened it. Inside was a small bottle, a metal key, and a folded piece of paper. The moment he saw the key, he recognized it. “This is the spare key to the safe in my study.” Claire went pale. Thomas held up the bottle. “And what is this?” Claire tried to stay calm. “Just my sleeping pills.” Thomas stared directly at her. “Your sleeping pills, the key to my safe… and all of it sewn inside your wedding dress?” Claire had no answer.
Thomas unfolded the paper. It showed the time of a flight leaving that same night and the address of a hotel near the airport. He looked at Claire. “We’re not taking this flight. I booked our honeymoon for tomorrow morning.” Claire immediately interrupted. “Thomas, you’re misunderstanding everything.” He held the paper up in front of her. “Then explain it. Why do you have a ticket to leave New York on our wedding night without my name on it?” Claire’s breathing became faster. Thomas immediately stopped the ceremony and ordered security to preserve the pouch exactly as it was and not let anyone touch anything inside it.
After the bottle was checked, medical staff confirmed it contained a powerful sedative. Thomas turned toward Claire, his voice slow and cold. “After the wedding, we were supposed to go back to the mansion to change before leaving. You know I always have a glass of whiskey after a major event.” Claire quickly said, “No, Thomas…” He continued, “You were going to put this in my drink, weren’t you?” Claire kept shaking her head. Thomas raised the safe key. “Then once I was unconscious, you were going to use this to open my safe.” Claire said nothing. That silence completely changed Thomas’s expression.
Thomas asked directly, “What were you planning to take from the safe?” Claire remained silent. He answered for her. “Cash, bonds, property certificates, and company share documents.” Claire began to cry. “I wasn’t going to hurt you. I only needed you to sleep for a few hours.” Thomas looked at her without blinking. “So you’d have enough time to take everything valuable and disappear?” Claire choked back tears. He placed the flight information in front of her. “And who were you supposed to meet at this hotel?” At that moment, Claire completely lost her composure.
When the police examined Claire’s phone, they found a long series of messages with a man named Ryan. Thomas read one message sent that very morning: “After the wedding, drug his drink. When he falls asleep, open the safe, take the money and documents, then come to the hotel. I’ll be waiting.” Thomas stared at Claire as if he no longer recognized her. “Who is Ryan?” Claire lowered her head. Thomas asked again, “Is he your lover?” Claire broke down crying. “Ryan and I have been together for almost a year.” Thomas froze. “So you were still going to marry me just to get access to my money?”
Claire finally confessed everything. “Ryan said that once we were married, you would trust me more. I just had to wait until tonight, drug you, take what was in the safe, and leave.” Thomas asked, “Where were the two of you planning to go?” Claire answered through tears, “Out of the country. Ryan already arranged everything.” Thomas tightened his grip on the key. “So while I was standing here thinking I was about to start a life with my wife, you were counting down the hours until you could drug me, rob my safe, and run away with your lover?” Claire could not look at him. “I’m sorry.” Thomas replied coldly, “You’re not sorry you planned it. You’re sorry Rex found out before you could do it.”
Thomas removed the wedding ring and placed it on the altar. “The wedding is over.” Claire stepped toward him. “Thomas, please, I can explain…” He stepped back, and Rex immediately moved between them. Thomas looked at her one last time. “If Rex hadn’t torn that dress, tonight I would have drunk the whiskey you prepared, passed out in my own home, and woken up to an empty safe and a new wife who had disappeared with her lover.” The pouch, the sedative, the key, and Claire’s phone were turned over to the police. Ryan was later found waiting for Claire at the hotel near the airport. Thomas sat alone on the church steps with Rex lying beside his feet. He rested one hand on the dog’s head and whispered, “Good boy. You didn’t ruin my wedding. You saved me from it.
